Surly (sic) you don't really expect us to buy the notion that you only want to ensure that one single location in the USA is gun free..
Actually, I didn't even advocate that one single location be gunfree. I brought up the question of whether it was wise to have unstructured, uncontrolled arming of the student population on a campus. That was the leap everyone made, including you, that I was somehow trying to take the guns from every individual in the US. Contrary to PfP popular belief, don't believe that "gunfree" is either possible or desirable.
The debate is not a valid one.
Only in your mind. There are many intelligent and educated people who believe it is. And many who aren't sure the Second is actually being interpreted correctly. It was written somewhat unclearly. I am not one of those, however, though I do believe in using common sense about certain situations that our forefathers could never have predicted.
That result cannot be attributed to disarming more folks.
No, I would attribute it to a change in the mindset of passengers and airlines alike. Prior to 9-11, we were told to sit passively and be highjacked. Now we are far more proactive in our response. Safety precautions like reinforced and locked doors, air marshalls who are trained and licensed, and a passenger and personnel base who are ready to leap on anyone who gives them reason. Guns were't allowed BEFORE 9-11, so I fail to see that particular connection.
Didn't realize you are a thread shrink. Ah, well. I don't really need the work. I have had a lot of training in counseling- but mostly with adolescents. Sometimes though, that seems pretty appropriate on SI. |
