New Zealand was the first country in the world to declare war on Germany and sent a very high proportion of soldiers to the other side of the planet to confront them and defeat them.
The USA was cowering like a pack of chicken-livered cowards on the other side of the ocean, making money selling to Germany and Great Britain, before they realized that things were not going all that great and Japan finally attacked them at Pearl Harbour after lots of provocation in Asia.
The USA was very late to realize what the heck was going on and to do something about it.
Here are the casualty rates. I see that New Zealand had twice as many deaths per capita as the USA. en.wikipedia.org
Of course, death rate isn't a particularly good measure because the aim of a war is to have the other guy die for HIS country, not to die for yours. But it is near enough for government work.
BTW, if you are worried about Commies, look how the USA electorate votes. It's a bit like the Roman Empire, which killed Jesus, was taken over by the Christians and the Catholic church HQ is bung in the middle of Rome while the Roman emperors are long gone, but evident in stacks of stones around the place, such as where we stayed in France last year.
More and more and more, central government, Big Brother, regulation and socialist values run the USA. Same as here in NZ. Everything not specifically permitted is illegal and anything that is legal is compulsory. The government spends over half the money [about two thirds in various guises] and owns vast tracts of the assets.
