I wonder why New Zealand even bothered with helping fight Nazis in WWII.

My father served aboard the New Zealand ship, HMNZS Achilles, during WWII and was in the Battle of the River Plate, where the Achilles and two British cruisers, HMS Ajax and Exeter, engaged the German battleship, Admiral Graf Spee, off the coast of South America in 1939, well before the US entered the war.

When he related details of the Battle to me when I was a kid, he mentioned that a large piece of shrapnel had zinged by him and lodged in a bulkhead a few inches away from his head. A few inches the other way and I wouldn't be here posting today.

Kiwis are stand up guys as well as the Aussies.
