What is more frightening.....at least for me......is that those intuitive students who knew they might need. and wished to have some kind of firearm.......assumedly only allowed after going through the necessary background checks, firearms training etc......were denied that right because some folks believed that gun free zones would remain gun free. During the heated debates of the past, society discussed the issue of gun rights and reached what seemed to some an equitable compromise. (for many......like myself....... these compromises were frightening and unrealistic) As we now know, the gun carrying compromise that was fashioned by anti-gun and pro-gun advocates hasn't gone far enough, and people are still in danger. It actually reminds me of several issues that we've faced in the past, and ones we face now. The public is usually evenly divided on most issues and so society is forced to talk and try to reach compromises. Many fell for the elusion that we'd all be safe if we just set up gun free zones. The administration at Virginia Tech ignorantly believed that human beings will follow the rules and ignored reality. That is....some people break rules......leaving the rest of us unprotected. This mindset is dangerous and leads to the unnecessary deaths of tens, if not thousands. Their other crime is that they did not take into consideration what students and faculty would do if someone decided to break their precious rule. Guess that issue was left out of the equation......totally inept thinking imo! If young people are trained properly they certainly have the ability to keep and use a firearm in their own defense. Short of that, maybe kids need to be taught basic lessons in self defense. Other than barricading the door in one classroom, and the actions of one brave professor, students and faculty at Virginia Tech didn't even put up a fight. That frightens me more than a properly trained individual that carries a legally permitted fire arm. The lessons we can take away from 9/11 and flight 93 have not been learned Frankly, the idea of college students armed is frightening to me.
