Maurice is correct. The New Zealanders paid a high price in blood during WWII. My recollection is the British used them up like cannon fodder, especially in the Italian campaign. In fact, as I recall (going from memory so if anyone wants to prove me wrong, go right ahead) NZ employed and lost so many troops in Europe that they were not really capable of defending themselves against the Japanese thus we stationed a large number of troops there. jdn
