I think it was wise to keep the status quo. Installing something very new in a region you do not understand, when the costs of such actions are unforeseeable, and the success of such actions are unpredictable, is not,imo, a good idea. When people in the region want democracy they will have a revolution. At that time we could aid their revolution- but I'm not sure it will be in our interest to do so. Democracy in the ME will probably look a lot like the Iranian model.
