"read the federalists papers" Have you read them? In particular, the one Madison wrote about militias? His reasoning was that the US would be unable to field a large enough army to hold off invaders. So the population would have to fill in the gap. However, things have changed. No way that individuals with handguns are going to stand off serious invaders. It worked really well in Afghanistan, didn't it? And per capita gun ownership was probably higher there than here. There were lots of guns in Iraq, pre-invasion. It didn't help them much, now did it? It is ludicrous to believe that untrained civilians are going to stand off a trained and equipped military force. That ranks right up there with your seatbelt extenders of death. Trying to use The Federalist Papers to back your argument is flawed.
