"You don't think Reagan gets credit for it?"

Reagan did an outstanding job as the "closer"...simply outstanding. But I agree with Buddy that the infrastructure of the old Soviet Empire was terribly flawed...My uncle, a heart surgeon (but with a degree in engineering too!) made a trip to Moscow in 1978 to deliver a series of speeches. He came back in awe of what he called "the biggest ponzi scheme in history" after touring what his hosts told him were the landmarks of Soviet technology and society.

Forty years of containment policy begun by Truman and carried on by each subsequent administration, republican and democratic, continued to test the ability of a bloated, centralized and corrupt system to continue to fool not only the outside world, but its own people as well. Eventually, poof, the final defense race and the advances in technology made it awfully hard to keep the fiction alive.

Lots of credit to go around. Reagan gets his share. But so do many others. The "closer" isn't always the winner of the game.

It was a team effort. <vbg>
