Chile's copper shipments to China rocket in Q1
Source: Platts Shipments of refined copper by Chile, the world's largest producer of the red metal, to China rocketed in the first three months of the year as the world's most populous nation resumed imports following a dip in prices.
According to figures released by Chile?s customs service, Chile shipped 219,324mt of cathode to China in the first quarter, up more than threefold from 61,755mt.
Chile exported a total 726,245mt of cathode during the quarter, up 9% from 668,389mt in the same period of last year, figures showed.
Other major recipients of Chilean copper included Italy (104,809mt), France (77,539mt), the US (71,528mt) and South Korea (50,255mt).
slight dip in sales in April, his company had already exported more copper to China in the first quarter than the whole of last year.
Meanwhile, Chilean exports of copper concentrates in the quarter slipped 2.6% to 1.681 million mt (total weight), from 1.725 million mt a year earlier, with Japan, China and India recieving close to 60% of exports.
Chile produced 5.37 million mt of copper last year. |
