April 24 (Bloomberg) -- Apple Inc.'s former finance chief cautioned Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs that the computer maker might need to take a charge if it changed the date of stock options grants.

Was this documented somewhere or was it simply a conversation? How strongly or believable the warning likely had some role in not pursuing it further, and the admision that Mr. Anderson KNEW there was some sort of issue and the settlement means that the SEC isn't that interested in making more than there is of this. Image a conversation with your tax accountant about the deductibility of that nice sports car.

Accountant: I caution you that if you drive it on personal trips on weekends, there may be a question about the deductibility.

You: I talked it over with my business partners and they're fine with whatever use the car gets.

Accountant: In that case I'll go ahead and deduct the whole thing.

IRS auditing agent: Who's the tax accountant?

Former Chief Financial Officer Fred Anderson relied on Jobs saying that the board had approved the dates, said Jerome Roth, a partner at Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP in San Francisco. He is Anderson's attorney.

Who was the CFO?

In any case, it's good to see this issue unwinding for all the companies involved. This should be a benchmark for many of the remaining and should help many tech companies in the coming months.
