Peru: Antamina churns out 74,400t Cu, 72,200t Zn in Q1

The Antamina mine in Peru produced 74,400t of copper, 72,200t of zinc and 1.88Mlb (853t) of molybdenum in the first quarter of 2007, the mine's 22.5%-owner Teck Cominco said in its Q1 results report.

Production in this year's first quarter compares to 101,200t copper, 26,300t zinc and 4.13Mlb molybdenum in 1Q06.

Teck Cominco's (TSX: TEK) share of Antamina's output amounted to 17,000t of copper, 16,000t of zinc and 424,000lb of molybdenum in 1Q07 compared to 23,000t, 6,000t and 929,000lb respectively year-on-year.

The company's cut of the mine's operating profit in 1Q07 came to Cdn$114mn (US$101mn) compared to Cdn$90.0mn year-on-year. Teck's total net earnings for Q1 came to Cdn$360mn versus Cdn$448mn year-on-year.

Anglo-Australian BHP Billiton (NYSE: BHP) and Switzerland's Xstrata (LSE: XTA) hold 33.75% each of the copper-zinc mining company Antamina. Japan's Mitsubishi has the remaining 10%.
