Yes, Hong Kong has some different rules from China, but that's an indulgence, which might or might not continue.

If takeover means nothing, then Taiwan might as well just remain the independent country it is.

I agree that it would be much better if NZ was to adopt Hong Kong's economic freedoms. People voting to take the money from those who do useful things is not good for either party in the long run. Democracy as commonly done is NOT the end state of history. It is inherently inadequate.
