Maurice, The US Constitution is a "states rights" document. The REAL constitutional purists were the Confederates, after all, this is what we were fighting for. And here we were locked in a deadly struggle for survival, in which we very nearly succeeded, and the Confederate leadership, after lengthy debate in the Senate, could not bring themselves to initiate a national draft, for to do so would violate the very constitutional principles for which we were fighting. Had we done this early, say in 1862, we would have doubtless won the war, as Lee's army would have been twice as large. So instead, we did what the Constitution allowed, Richmond called upon the individual states to send troops, which they did, irregularly.
The Confederates were the real Jeffersonians and placed his image on Confederate stamps and money, not because they had read about him, but because many of the leadership actually knew him in life and understood his vision for Virginia and for the nation.
So don't be so sure that the US Constitution is a "free trade" document and it surely doesn't make provision for the national government to send the military all over the world enforcing "free trade" and "making the world free for freedom" or any of the other Orwellian claptrap.
What I would like to see, under the pressure of a future crisis, is political devolution, like happened in the USSR and may happen yet in Canada and elsewhere. Let the Atzlan Mexicans have California and the southwest. The north can go wherever it wants. For my corner of the country, we already have a flag (actually, a bunch of them) and I suppose we could call the place the New Confederacy. And we should get our share of the federal spoils, after all we helped pay for them. Can you imagine the USS Truman being renamed the CSN Jeff Davis and flying the Stars and Bars? <grin>
But seriously, what we have now is global gangsterism, just a new variety of mafia trampling over all the peoples of the world. Any way it can be ended, however destructive, is a good way. Slagle |
