The McKinney-based copper electrical wire manufacturer reported net income for the quarter ended March 31 of $6.4 million, or 27 cents a share. That's down from net income of $16.1 million, or 68 cents a share, in 2006's first quarter. Sales, however, were up 3 percent to $260.7 million in first-quarter 2007 from $252 million in the year-ago period, boosted by higher prices for building wire. Analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call expected earnings of 25 cents a share on revenue of $245.3 million. Encore Wire (NASDAQ: WIRE) President and CEO Daniel L. Jones said some competitors had cut their wire prices to maintain market share in response to a "much publicized" slowdown in residential construction. "We have been through these competitive conditions before and will focus on our industry leading order fill rates and our exceptional product offerings featuring commercial wire in true colors and our new armored cable line," Jones said in an earnings release Tuesday.
