unions are great at negotiations for higher wages and benefits. companies if making big money would rather give into unions and pass costs along as long as they have demand. I expect this is where gm , ford got into trouble. then never really held union to negotiations rather gave what they wanted as sales were constantly improving.

I remember when union drivers were making big time bucks, great benefit package then profits disappeared.. the unions refused to give back in all those negotiations and continued to demand larger wage increases. The result was outside contracting to dedicated haulers at half the rates and better production. today none of the fleet in the united states are employees, all are outside contractors.
