NATIONAL BROADBAND STRATEGY

The great Adlai Stevenson once observed that
Americans can't read the writing on the wall
until their backs are up against it. How much
worse must things get for the America before
we start to take seriously the need to develop
a national broadband strategy and concrete
action plans to implement it? Please reread
our 8-step plan in the light of today's news.

Commr. Copps calls for national broadband
strategy: "Every year brings more bad news
as the United States slides farther down the
broadband rankings. It's a national embarrass-
ment and the only way to change it is to dev-
elop a broadband strategy like every other
industrialized nation has already done. These
rankings aren't a beauty contest -- they're
about our competiiveness is a country and
creating economic opportunity for all our
people. Bringing high-speed broadband to
every corner of the country is the central
infrastructure challenge we face. Always
in the past, our nation found ways to stay
ahead of everyone else in building infra-
structure like turnpikes, railroads and high-
ways. Now, in broadband, we're not even
an also-ran." (from Benton Foundation)

"I spent over two and a half hours of my
Saturday night with the nice Verizon people.
Party animals, not. Educational experience,
not. Redeeming social value, unfortunately,
severely limited. I did learn that Verizon
trouble tickets could be closed without the
problem being fixed, and conversely, tickets
could remain open even when the problem
was resolved."
