When you say energy independence is like world peace, you are not too subtlely implying that it is an impossibility. The truth is that the technology is here today to be oil independent. We just lack the political will to implement the policies to make it happen. Slap a permanent 100% tax on gasoline prices at the point of final sale and watch how quickly it happens. Then use the tax revenues from that to provide incentives for folks who use alternative energy to power their vehicles, whether it's electricy, ethanol, hydrogen, or whatever.
