That the enemy is real, does not excuse or justify bad decisions about the enemy. In fact, because the enemy is real, it is all the more important to make the right decisions. If you were shadow boxing, errors would be less dangerous.

I can second that sentiment whole-heartedly. So, since the enemy is real, what decisions should we be making?
