Yep, the Republicans were taken over by a mix of very wealthy contributors and religious fanatics and then we elected them to both houses of congress and the presidency. They spread a gospel of "government is evil and should stay out people's personal affairs" (except where women's rights were concerned) then stood by while swindlers took over the housing and financial markets - didn't want to "interfere."

We've done it to ourselves.
