India's Sterlite sees copper production up 28% this year

India's largest copper producer Sterlite Industries Ltd. plans to produce 400,000 metric tons in the financial year ending March 31, 2008, up 28% from the previous year, a senior company official said Wednesday.

The company produced 313,000 tons of copper in FY 2006-07.

"The production will rise because of maximum capacity utilization of Sterlite's smelter in Tuticorin," said Chief Executive Kishore Kumar.

Kumar added that the company's copper exports may fall in the current financial year, as domestic demand continues to rise steadily, though he didn't give any estimates.

Sterlite exported 187,800 tons in FY 2006-07.
