P.T.,

Sometimes, a company can deny rumors until it's blue in the face (i.e. CYMI and maybe now SPCT), but rumors seem like creatures in a horror flick. THEY REFUSE TO DIE! My take on the situation is that one of two things can happen:

1) the rumor continues to spread despite the denial. Recipients of the rumor assume that rumor is valid because it is coming out after the company's denial. Thus the company must be lying.

2) the rumor mutates or changes entirely. Examples for SPCT would be "Ok, 3Q will be alright, but 4Q will be flat" or "LG wasn't the lost business, Nortel is, it just hasn't been announced yet." This situation is harder to fight than AIDS.

In either case, unless the company comes right out and says "everything is wonderful and we expect 100% growth until the next millenium," you pretty much have to wait until the earnings report to kill the rumors.

ASND was brought up as an example of when the rumors were correct. The difference in that case was that ASND never issued any form of denial. They just let the investors twist in the breeze until ASND's management was sure that earnings would be bad.
