Muslims have lived in France for hundreds of years and now they would be regarded as undesirable, even terrorists. This would clearly split the population and lead to social unrest. Secondly, as you say, the countervailing presence of France to the US in the UN, the European government and NATO would be lost. So we could expect to see much stronger anti-Russian and anti-Muslim positions being taken by those organizations. Sarkozy and Angela Merkel would form an ideal pro-Israel / anti-Palestinian partnership. > Would we be heading WWIII? Unless something crazy is attempted against Iran or Russia, I don't see that just yet. But international tensions will have to increase as many nations attempt to resist the pressure of US hegemony. Israel, of course, will be even freer to do as it wishes in both the occupied territories and neighboring countries eg Lebanon, Syria, so wars there are much more likely.
