Sell in May is a cute way to say sell in Spring.

I think if you look at the charts of a couple hundred small cap resource explorers you will find that on average they are down at least 10% from their highs in the last few months. Many are down much more than that. I'd say sell in spring has already been a confirmed effect this year.

I listed somewhere about 4 reasons why sell in spring happens in or around May each year and I'll add one other that's especially pertinent in a year like this,...people sell off stock positions to pay their taxes due :-[)
