Apparently your source includes both the money he got from Ford and the money he got from Boeing for previous service, not just money from Ford. It also includes hiring bonuses and money that he would have earned from Boeing had he not left, that money isn't going to be repeated each quarter. But even if the pay was $39mil a quarter every quarter it would be worth it, if by his decisions and efforts he can have a positive impact on Ford. The issue is very much whether he does a good job, or more generally whether high salaries allow Ford to get someone who will do a better job. If they could get someone as good or better for say $1mil a year, then it would seem that they are overpaying, but could they? Also even if they could, they probably couldn't keep the guy after he demonstrated that he was a good CEO unless they gave him a big raise.

November, 2006 was a wake up call.

November 2006 has almost nothing to do with this.
