Oregon has a law that says you can't pump your own gas, which nearly resulted in the incineration of my entire family back in 1976.

We were returning to Idaho after a job interview, overnighting in Pendelton. At the gas station the attendant filled our tank and I paid him without getting out of the car.

I drove off, hearing a loud clunk. Wife yells "Fire!" I look back The pump is lying on the ground and there is a fire coming out of the mount. I drove away about a block, with my gas filler pipe open, but apparently not on fire.

I never liked attendant filling after that.
