I read your post. You say i have a dog in the fight and you have none. Man thats disingenous. YOu have always made the Pal case. You have just found an excuse for the US to recuse itself from the ME, not to support democracies anywhere as a matter of policy, and to allow a strategic part of the globe to fall to enemy control (al quaeda). IF you think we are wasting money now, that aint nothing to what we will spend to defeat and energized al quaeda controlling the region.
