Angier: If you have the time, read my post 1947. Medicaid does cover HIV/AIDS medical care and medications but I don't know for sure if all available HIV meds are covered. SSI gives the person income and medicaid coverage. I assume that most HMOs have drug formularies that restrict what meds can be described; a doctor can appeal and usually the HMO medical director (I was one in the past) will authorize a new med as long as it is FDA approved and not experimental/investigational. As far as I know, Medicare does not pay for HIV meds. Private insurance does. I would like to know the cost of Viracept as compared to Crix and the other HIV meds.
