When you engage someone on the thread you engage everyone who cares to weigh in.

Surely you jest. You engage someone when you address that poster and/or his comments. We get to pick and choose. There's no requirement to address even comments made directly to you let alone points made between two other parties. If participation required engagement of all poster on all points, well, the mind boggles.

And don't get snippy.
