Other recent developments include:

- Solar pumping to supply off-grid villages with drinking water
- Solar powered vaccine refrigerators and other solar powered medical equipment
- Solar desalination

Fossil-fuel technology requires infrastructure, so we may see developing countries leapfrog straight into solar and other renewable energy that is available locally. Just like we have seen many, many villages now have access to a cell/satellite phone.
