I'm a little surprised at the Fred Thompson bandwagon. Here is a fellow who was a solid but undistinguished legislator. He left politics out of boredom and frustration with the process and returned to acting. He was a champion of McCain/Feingold, hardly a plus for most republicans.

Don't get me wrong. He is well respected. He was able to work on his side of the aisle and across it when he was a Senator...but he admitted he was never enamored with the heavy workload or the actual political games. His legislative record for his eight years in the senate is pretty light. He is a good communicator...

Why the allure of a nice but undistinguished gentleman who has quit politics twice before out of boredome or dislike of the heavy workload?

What's the magic?
