You missed my point.

Howard Dean was deemed the "front-runner" for months before Iowa. Gore even stepped out and endorsed Dean at the time because of his popularity.

That was before his campaign started imploding, allowing John Kerry to manage a come-from-behind victory. That outburst by Dean after Iowa was just icing on the cake.

Reports say that the Dean campaign ran afoul of many Democrat insiders, and that created a lot of infighting that wasn't exposed to the media until after the damage was obvious. To make a long story short, the Dems eventually settled on a guy who turned out to be an absolute dud against Bush. Whoops.
