Gunmen in cars trade shots in Florida city

Tue May 1, 2007 5:49PM EDT

MIAMI (Reuters) - At least six people were shot in two possibly related incidents in downtown Jacksonville, Florida, on Tuesday when assailants in a car fired on a house and two carloads of gunmen later traded shots nearby, police said.

All injuries appeared to be non life-threatening, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Department said in a statement.

Four of the injured were struck by birdshot when the occupants of a vehicle fired a shotgun at the porch of a house. The weapons used in the later gunfight between occupants of two vehicles were not known, the police said.

Police were investigating whether the incidents were connected.

"We are in the preliminary stages of this investigation, but it appears to be a neighborhood dispute among individuals known to one another," the chief of investigations at the sheriff's office, Dwain Senterfitt, said in the statement.

Such shootings are not uncommon in the United States, particularly in poorer urban areas.

But initial reports of gunfire and injuries in downtown Jacksonville generated some alarm in the aftermath of the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history on April 18, when a Virginia Tech university student killed 32 people and then himself.

The shootings also came just a couple of days after a gunman killed two people and himself in a Kansas City shopping mall.
