Large-scale mining begins at Zambia copper mine

miningweekly.co.za

CEO Craig Williams said that the mobilisation of the mining fleet would enable Lumwana to reach a production rate of 120-million t/y by the second quarter 2008.

Mine manager Jon Yelland explained that the large-scale mining equipment assembled at Lumwana had started the initial waste stripping required to provide the bulk-fill requirements to support the construction programme.

“As the orebody is just a few metres from the surface we will have no difficulty accessing the orebody in preparation for commissioning of the 20-million ton a year concentrator in mid-2008,” he commented.

Construction at Lumwana started in January 2006 and the company said that it remained on schedule. It was anticipated that the Lumwana mine would produce an average of 169 000 t/y of copper metal contained in concentrates for the first six years of its 37-year mine life.

Equinox said that a diesel powered Hitachi EX5500 hydraulic excavator would be the initial production loading unit until effective ramp establishment and power reticulation take place by which time an additional four EX5500 face shovel units in electric configuration would be on site to take advantage of the higher efficiencies delivered by reticulated in-pit power.
