Wolfowitz as a planner of the Iraq war, if you will remember, was one in the administration that told us the war would pay for itself. For this "understanding" of finances he was rewarded with becoming the head of the world bank. Virtually everything that Wolfowitz believed and told us about Iraq has turn out to be wrong. For this he was rewarded with the plum of becoming the head of the World Bank? As head, he rewarded his girlfriend with a nice fat tax free pay hike. If you can't see the wrong headed morality of this, then we disagree.
The only thing I know about Wolfowitz is his appearance in the Mike Moore film Farneheit 911, where he doesn't look very flattering. So I don't have any of your pre-conceived notions about him.
What I know about this "scandal" is that he tried to recuse himself from setting his girlfriend's pay package, and was denied that request by the World Bank. For me, that's enough. If the WB won't let him be uninvolved in some personal matter when he requests it, they should take whatever he decides. The WB shouldn't both say "You must decide" and then say "Your decision was nepotism, you are damned to hell!".
If you want him fired because you don't like his influence on Iraq, say so. If you want him fired because he is a bad manager at the WB, say so. If you want him fired because his girlfriend got a pay raise that was unwarranted, say so and prove that Wolfowitz did something wrong in that process.
If nothing comes out of this board review of his girlfriend's pay package, it will be clear to me that a bunch of fatcats at the World Bank don't like being told they are just fatcats at a bloated unproductive government institution. We shall see.... |
