They had the option of reducing the price below the auction clearing price. It is in their interest for the transaction to go well for everyone. They don't want to screw people who are also their customers, and they have further auctions to get away in the future. The price reduction and associated scaleback also provides for wider distribution helping entrench customer loyalty and creating a bigger happier market for the next equity release.
