I know quite a few folks who love Bush. They're great people in most cases.
I suspect they just take comfort in what they perceive as traditional American values... Mom, the flag, apple pie...
I once some years ago worked with a gentleman, a conservative if there ever was one, who could not understand the liberal point of view despite the many friendly debates we had over dinners and drinks and weekends at the shore.
One day, however, he came into my office in a rage, screaming that the company would not pay his assistant for the time off he authorized for her to care for her ill mother. It was nothing excessive, she had to leave for an few hours here or there to get her mom to the doctor's appointments and so forth... and over the prior years she had been an excellent employee, always there, on time, overtime when necessary, etc... but company policy being company policy...
He screamed... When I ran my own business I never treated my people like this!!!! There oughta be a fucking law!"
Well, at that moment... enlightenment! Not everyone treated people right. Sometimes you need a law - government - to step in and keep things fair.
This guy would give you the shirt off his back but - any hated any form of government regulation - until he experienced firsthand the consequences of letting businesses do as they pleased. HE didn't treat his people that way - but others, especially corporations....
He left our company a flaming liberal... |
