>Z, training isn't going to help me unless I want to switch careers.

Unless said training makes you much better than your peers in other countries.

>You can build a case for protectionism, but the underlying problem remains. We'll just be fighting a back-court defense against the forces of globalization.

We can't fight it forever, but we can certainly buy time, especially given that the culprits for the most rapacious effects of globalism are multinational companies that began as American companies. A few decades of reconfiguring the country's work force to keep up with trends can do a lot.

>As for the way you view society and the economy, ever read "I, Pencil"? Whether you subscribe to that or The Grapes of Wrath,

Friedman seems to think that people are pencils while Steinbeck thinks that people are human beings. I'm leaning towards the Steinbeck side.

we can agree that the best way for this society to move forward is to empower and motivate the average American citizen.

Except our particular society doesn't try to empower and motivate the average American citizen these days. Rather, it empowers the waaaaaay-above-average American citizens while trying to keep the average citizen from noticing.

>The difference is that you'd rather focus on the circumstances of those who have it tougher than others, while I'd rather leave that to individual charity and values and have public policy focus on the big picture.

And your way fails those people that have it tougher than others, and ends up making it easier for those that already have it easier.
