They are destroyed after 1 year.

The dealer is supposed to keep a copy (Form 4473) and turn it in if they go out of business, but there is no enforcement except to suspend their license - and they don't officially go out of business unless they drop their license anyway.

There are no forms at all if the gun was purchased at a show or through private sales.
