As a resident of the Denver metro area, I would disagree that DIA was a major blunder. Yes, large mistakes were made (ex. that still largely inoperable automated baggage system) and the cost came in a few hundred million over estimates. In the long run, these errors will likely prove to be insignificant. For example, DIA can land 3 planes simultaneously even during inclement weather because of the large distance between runways. This would not have easily accomplished by just expanding Stapleton. Also, the cost of ca. 3 billion (I think) is not that high when one considers the cost of improvements at other airports. For example, putting in just a new terminal at Newark airport cost ca. 1 billion. Thus, I would not give Pena blame (or, for that matter, credit) for the new airport.

As regards his comments regarding the semi-equipment industry, Pena appears to be moderately brain-dead. I think he must have spent the last 4 years making fund raising phone calls from the White House as opposed to observing how US based semi-equipment companies have caught up to and surpassed Japanese based semi-equip companies in shipments (With the notable exception of lithography companies, however.).
