<would it be fair to add that the collective memory is longer than that of the individual?>

Google and Wikipedia are quite collective and certainly robust. I think in human terms, anything older than living memory rapidly dwindles into mythology with limited attachment to reality.

<... past grievences ,even imaginary ones ,can twist one into a vengeful ,hating person bent on revenge. >

No, I don't know that. I don't think it's true. I think bad upbringing makes infants and children into malevolent adults. Those brought up well will not easily want vengeance for deeds before living memory. They won't hate today's Germans for what some German's ancestor did 150 years ago to one of their great great grandmothers. A son is not responsible for the nasty deeds of his father. While the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, humans are variable and individual enough that a child cannot be expected to do things greatly like their parents, though there will be more than a passing resemblance in most instances.

Similarly, Negroes today, such as Condoleezza Rice, wanting compensation for slavery 200 years ago, paid by Y2K immigrants' taxes, would be ridiculous. Which is not to suggest Condoleezza wants such money. I'm just showing how silly it is. Plenty of Euros didn't have slaves and are now poor. Plenty of USA Negroes never had slave ancestors [Hussein-Obama for example] in the USA.
