Country is the new rock. Not just for male singers, female also. I don't know what happened to mainstream music- imho it started around 1990, I noticed as a college student in CA there were no radio stations that played madonna anymore.

Popular rock music pretty much went away. This was NOT a manifestation of downloading (notice I left off the word "illegal").

My personal opinion is that the highly abusive recording industry felt that they could make more money with Rap artists, who were easier to manipulate with little business skills, vs. traditional rock and pop artists who typically demanded lucrative contracts. There were some very promising artists in the early 90s (Tracy Chapman was one) who flamed pretty bright and died on the vine, right about the time they demanded more money for their second CD after their newfound fame.

Just to remind everyone, the Dixie Chicks made $200K (total or each, I forgot) - for their FLY CD which sold 20 million copies, and this was AFTER they achieved success with their first CD.

You can make more than that as a consultant at Cisco.
