"One of the true failings of blogging is that too often people take the most ungenerous view possible of someone else’s writing. Jumping from Sowell’s brief hypothetical (about “worsening” problems and whether “the day may yet come”) to saying that he is “openly hoping for military coups” is an example of this. A fair reading of Sowell is that he is openly hoping that the “degeneracy in our politicians, our media, our educators, and our intelligentia” will stop “worsening.”

But what makes Sullivan’s sin here so egregious is that he is being this uncharitable to Thomas Sowell, who’s prolific writing and scholarship has firmly established him as a supporter of freedom...

...Perhaps written by another person (such as a general, or someone who has advocated the overthrown of the American government), or in the context of an article expounding the virtues of military coups, such words may have had the meaning Sullivan reads into them. But to ascribe such sentiments to Thomas Sowell shows, I think, that his loathing of mainstream conservatism seriously clouds his judgment."
