The timing given by Charlie about AMD recently "discovering" higher clock speeds fits very well with the recent "benchmark clarification." Why suddenly release information on how much better Barcelona will be "clock for clock?"

Previously, 2.5 GHz was going to be the highest clock and "AMD's best" would beat "Intel's best" (2.66 GHz Clovertown) by 10% in SPECint_rate and 40% (50%?) in SPECfp_rate. When AMD knew that the initial clock speeds would be much higher than 2.5 GHz, they wanted to make sure that the "top speed Barcelona" will be much, much more than 10% faster than 2.66 GHz Cloverdale.

Rather than snickering at the "clock for clock" benchmark results, we now see a very good reason for them.
