Nadine, I think part of the odd thinking of the USA is that each 4 July they celebrate independence from King George III [rich irony there with the USA now run by King George II]. So, when an opportunity comes to poke Britain in the eye, it's kind of compulsive, whether it's sending money to the IRA to blow up families in Omagh or supporting Islamic Jihad against Britain, France and Israel in the British defence of the Suez Canal.
