Why should we suddenly change the standard?

"I want ALL immigrants that come to this country to speak English."

My sister's best friend spoke Czech because her grandparents didn't speak enough English to be able to converse. My mother hired a lady to clean her house that spoke twenty times more English after ten years of service than she did when she first started; and nobody in our family spoke Latvian. One of my best friends' grandfather lived out his life in a Russian enclave in Chicago so he could communicate. My friend learned Russian in college so he could speak the language of his heritage (so did his brother).

What has changed is society. Now people seem to expect the responsibility to fall on every organization dealing with immigrants, instead of the family (or nationality community) bearing the responsibility to translate.
