Geode, re: Will the Republicans defect and use Bush as a scapegoat? Why haven't they en masse by now? They have a gem of an opportunity to blame everything on the Bushes and the Roves and the Cheneys and wipe the slate clean for 2008. Why haven't they taken it?

They haven't taken it because the backbone of the Republican party is the religious right and the red-necked South. The Republican business community would back such a move but the "no evolution," Americans don't run" and "love it or leave it" crowd would have eaten their babies.

That crowd won all the political battles prior to the last election and they must have felt bullet proof. Now, however, that base is looking at becoming a long term minority, and not liking it. That reality is painting such a bleak picture that they'll forgive their Republican politicians for separating out and opposing the continuation of the war.

After all, they can't vote for any "liberal" so if they don't get mad they'll stick. The politicians with their fingers in the wind sense that's the case and they're positioning themselves to blame Bush, blame the Iraqis and blame the Democrats.

Who cares who they blame as long as they stop this madness? Ed
