Republicans really want Reagan to rise from the dead. Not the REAL Reagan, but the mythological one they've constructed as a totem to worship. They need the mythological Reagan's power to drive out the corrupt, loser stench Bush has put on their party.

Since they don't really know who Fred Thompson is, and he's an actor, it's a short leap to project the Reagan-totem onto him. Some of his LINES on "Law and Order" have had him sounding very Reagan-like!
