"The whole "Bush = Hitler", or "Bush equals 'Hitler-lite'" idea is ridiculous. "

Like all analogies, it isn't exact. But it is hard to ignore that he is trying to acquire the same sort of powers using the same sort of methods. It is also hard to ignore the fascist tendencies of many of the neocons.

So, is he Hitler? No. Could he become one? Probably not. The US, for example, is a lot stronger with respect to the rest of the world than Germany was.

The real question is, can we become a dictatorship? That answer is 'yes'. If Bush, or any other succeeding president if the laws aren't changed, decides to, that is all it takes. A legal framework for it has been put into place.

Which is why ol' TJ said that "those who are willing to give up their freedoms for a sense of security deserve neither freedom nor security". Not only don't they deserve it, they won't have them.
