Its an expensive habit we need to break.

Why?

Because the rich are getting richer at the expense of the poor.

What do you think are the qualities that make a top candidate worth $1,000,000 and a qualified one worth only $500K.

I've never hired, or been in any on going close association with, a university chancellor. So I can't really give you any specifics here. I can however say that if the $1mil guy really is much more effective than the $500k guy, that the extra $500k would be worth it. Harvard university is a multi-billion dollar a year operation. A moderate increase in effectiveness of those billions, matters a lot more than $500k does.

But how do you determine if a chancellor is worth $500K more? The university where he's from has been to a major bowl every year for the past 20? The GPA at his school wemt up an 1/8 of a point during his tenure? Is that worth $500K? The truth of the matter is that these salaries are arbitrary. They are high because there is a good ole boy network that keeps them high.

Like I said, its an expensive habit.
