And if oil went down to where it was before it went up the 350 percent it wouldn't be dirt cheap. It wouldn't be at some level that would require massive government intervention.

Even without the introduction of alternatives, oil is a volatile commodity. It could move around quite a lot. If alternatives are going to be a good mass replacement (rather than just a supplement on the side) they are going to have to be cheap enough to maintain a lot of their market share even when oil is relatively cheap.
